A wise man enjoyed going to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a person moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and he walked faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer still and called out, "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
The young man replied, "The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and there are starfish all along every mile? You cannot possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. "I made a difference to that one," he said.
As we discussed the formation and goals of our office, we each agreed that it is important to make a difference in the lives of our clients and in our community. Someone mentioned the essay, The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley, as a model for our counseling efforts. On reading this essay, we realized that it nicely expresses the mission of our work.
Our counseling mission is to make a difference, one person at a time. At Sugar Land Psychology, we hope that we make a lasting difference in your life.
Call one of the clinicians at Sugar Land Psychology to find out how they might make a difference in your life:
To achieve our goal of making a difference, we adhere to the following values:
1. We respect each person with whom we work. Every person has unique experiences and values which are important in defining their life and its direction. We strive to respect and to work within those guidelines in a non-coercive way to help each person attain desired goals.
2. We uphold the ethical guidelines of our respective disciplines. Each clinician, in order to be a member of their professional organization, agrees to abide by the ethical stipulations of that group.
3. We treat each person with honesty and openness. Although our counseling work can seem mysterious, we strive to include each client in the process so that our methods and goals are clear. Clients are expected to participate in the counseling process by making goals for themselves and by being an active participant in treatment.
4. We collaborate with other members of your health-care team. Emotional and behavioral issues are usually interdependent with other health issues. We believe that it is important to share information about your counseling with other health-care providers, with your permission, in order to understand the overall clinical picture and to work most efficiently for your well-being.
